The
American Freestyle Karate Black Belt Manual
consists of 40 years research in the martial arts and creates a setting by which
every student of karate, whether novice or expert, can unlock the secrets of karate
kata. This book was originally a series of bulletins for students from white through
black belt. I have set it out into 6 sections:
Section 1 is the introduction
to the Dan Anderson Method of Karate
Section 2 has to do with Direct style
of approach
Section 3 deals with Indirect approach to fighting
Section
4 deals with Combined approach, mixing Direct and Indirect approach
Section
5 goes over infighting and trapping
Section 6 is the Instructor Series; 17
bulletins dealing specifically with how to teach
Regardless of what discipline
you study, this book is an invaluable aid to the study of your discipline.
Here's
what reviewers have to say about it:
This
is exactly the kind of book that I wish I'd had 37 years ago when I first got
started in the martial arts. It is a collection of history and philosophy that
helps you understand the context of the art along with tips, tricks, and drills
to help you perfect it.
Miyamoto
Musashi (1584 - 1645) was arguably the greatest swordsman who ever lived. Considered
Kensei, the sword saint of Japan, Musashi killed more than sixty trained samurai
warriors in fights or duels during the feudal period where even a minor battle
injury could lead to infection and death. Two years before he died, he retired
to a life of seclusion in a cave where he codified his winning strategy in the
famous Go Rin No Sho (Book of Five Rings), a tome that is still revered by martial
artists and businesspeople alike nearly 400 years after it was written.
Much
like Mushashi's Go Rin No Sho, what you have in your hands is a master martial
artist's perspective of his art all wrapped up in one tidy little package.

Technique
is undoubtedly an important part of martial training. However, even more important
than technique is the understanding of "why" the technique is as it
is. With this knowledge of the underlying concepts, the martial artist will be
able to adapt and vary any given technique to be wholly appropriate to the exact
circumstances faced in any given moment.
The
small numbers of martial artists who have this knowledge often gain it through
countless hours of trial and error. They develop an intuitive understanding of
the principles of combat. However, when asked to articulate and explain this knowledge
to others, they often struggle. They know the "why", "when"
and "how" on a subconscious level, but they are unable to impart this
knowledge to others. Their only option is therefore to put their students through
the same process of trial and error in the hope that they also stumble across
the same intuitive understanding.
Dan
Anderson is one of a small number of martial artists who fully understands the
concepts of combat; as is evidenced by his unequalled achievements. However, what
is even more impressive is that he is able to clearly communicate this hard won
knowledge so others can make use of it.
I
am certain that this book will be one of the most beneficial you will ever read.
Within these pages you will find forty years of knowledge clearly explained by
one of the most successful martial artists of all time. Buying this book was a
smart move! All you need now is to read it, learn it and put it into practise.
Your training partners won't know what hit them!
